Japan’s Anyana Onozuka Earns First Gold in Women’s Ski Superpipe at the Eighth Dew Tour Breckenridge

What started as a snowy, overcast training morning, cleared up for prime competition conditions for the Women’s Ski Superpipe event, allowing the athletes to push for their best tricks.

Pushing hardest was gold medalist Ayana Onozuka, of Japan, who clinched her first Dew Tour gold. In years past, the event has been dominated by Maddie Bowman, who is currently out due to injury.

Onozuka earned a top score of 89.40 in her first run, which consisted of well-executed, technical tricks and clean grabs. The winning run was marked by a left 5 mute into a right 5 safety, followed by a left 7 safety into a switch right 7 safety.

Consistently qualifying for the Ski Superpipe finals over the last couple years, Onozuka’s first-ever Dew Tour win was marked by what some are saying was one of the best switch 7’s yet performed in the Women’s Superpipe field.

Behind Onozuka was Cassie Sharpe, of Canada, who claimed second with a score of 87.40, and Brita Sigourney, of the U.S., who landed in third place with a score of 85.00. Sharpe’s best-scoring run was marked by impressive amplitude, effortless-looking flow and two back-to-back tricks, but it wasn’t quite enough to unseat Onozuka. Sharpe’s notable tricks included a left 7 to back-to-back right 5 to left 5 to back-to-back right flair to left flair.

Sigourney, whose best run featured huge amplitude and impressive straight airs, said she felt good but, “I over waxed my skis and was a little caught off guard.”
