Reno’s David Wise wins Men’s Freeski Superpipe at the Dew Tour Breckenridge event.  Heavy snowfall did little to curb the speed, amplitude and overall level of performance with which the Freeski Superpipe men attacked the 22-foot superpipe.

The competition was marked by impressive and numerous double cork 1260s.  Wise was guaranteed a complete redemption on his second run after he landed one of the most notable doubles of the day giving him the top score of 91.60.  His sequence of tricks were a rightside 900 to a leftside double cork 1260 to a rightside 1080 into a switch cork 720 and finished off with a rightside double cork 1260. The final double cork 1260 showcased Wise’s strength and persistence, as it seemed as if he didn’t have enough speed going into the final hit.

“I was feeling stressed today,” said Wise. “What did it for me was my buddy Alex Ferreira who  landed an amazing run and got himself on the podium. The pressure was off me (there was an American on the podium) so I went for broke.  Fortunately, I landed that right double cork at the bottom. Usually, I don’t do those that small and it took every ounce of energy to get that around.”

Beau-James Wells, of Wanaka, New Zealand, was sitting in first place for the entire competition and was edged out by the last athlete to go, Wise, in the final run of the event.  Wells, who is the younger brother of veteran freeskier Jossi Wells, earned the second-place score of 90.40. His run featured a switch 720, right double 1260 into a left 900 to a right double 900 to a right double 1260 for the finale.

“I wasn’t worried about too much, it was my second Dew Tour finals ever,” said Wells. “I was just happy to be here.”

Aspen, Colorado’s Alex Ferreira also captured his highest score of 88.60 in his second attempt. The first run didn’t go as he hoped, and Ferreira admitted he was quite nervous going into the second run.

“I hate that feeling, but sometimes it can bring the best out of a person and I love that,” said Ferreira.

Ferreira secured the third spot on the podium with a double down the pipe 900 into a left cork 720 tail to a switch right cork 720 mute to leftside double cork 1260 mute, finishing off with a rightside 900 tail.
