A new crowd funding, Indiegogo, campaign for a Gold Coast-based wave pool company Surf Lakes, has officially launched.

The initial goal is to raise $500,000 to build out a large-scale prototype after which Surf Lakes will ultimately require $20 million execute the finished project.

Surfers have long craved consistent waves and there’s no doubt that if such a facility could successfully be built and executed it would be massively popular.

Many attempts have been made to build wave pools, from Typhoon Lagoon, the now defunct wave pool in Japan and the recently built Wavegarden in Spain.

If Surf Lakes can pull this off we’ll certainly be waxing our boards and heading down unda.

The three stage project has three funding stages.

  1. $490,000 to build a large scale prototype with full engineering design
  2. 2. $2 million to build a full-scale prototype with full engineering design
  3. 3. $20 million to build the entire complex

Some of the statistics include:

  • 8 reef breaks (2 meter barrels for intermediate and advanced surfers)
  • 4 shore breaks (rolling surf for beginners)
  • 5 pulses ever minute – put to 12 waves per pulse
  • 60 waves per minute – up to 3,600 wave per hour
  • Average ride – 10 seconds
  • 10 rides an hour per surfer
  • 5-10 second barrels
  • Up to 10ft waves
