Laird Hamilton Calls Out Maya Gabiera and Carlos Burle Over “Biggest Wave” Claims
In an interview on Oct 29 with CNN, big wave legend Laird Hamilton commented on claims that Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle “surfed” the biggest wave in history after catching a monstrous swell off the coast of Portugal on Oct 27. Hamilton stated that while Carlos could have “wiped out” on the biggest wave ever, he can’t claim it, because he didn’t “make the wave.” Laird went on to say that Brazilian big wave warrior, female surfer Maya Gabiera, who almost drowned and was rescued by Burle, should never have been out there in the first place. “This is something you start practicing for when your 4-5 years old and… you evolve to this point…Maya doesn’t have the skill to be in these conditions; she should not be in this kind of surf…he’s lucky she didn’t drown.”
