Kelly Slater rocks clothes from his new line, Outerknown, for GQ.

Kelly Slater announced last December that he would leaving Quiksilver after a 20 year relationship. His goal was to go-it-alone to start a new surf-inspired men’s clothing line. Go-it-alone is a relative term as Slater ultimately partnered with longtime friend and designer John Moore, and signed on with Kering, the parent company of Volcom.

Slater has been rocking Volcom outerwear and wetsuits since the announcement while his brand Outerknown prepares to launch.

GQ just released a photo gallery from a shoot they did with Slater on Montauk in May to give a sneak peak of the new line.

Judging from the looks, the brand offers a grown-up aesthetic for the sophisticated surfer while still incorporating progressive cuts and cool patterns.

The price range reflects the more refined taste as well with products ranging from $70-$400, which will no doubt cause some to balk. Yet Slater never promise cheapy Tees and board shorts.

“I created Outerknown to smash the formula. To lift the lid on the traditional supply chain and prove that you can actually produce great looking menswear in a sustainable way…the last two years have been a huge eye-opener for me. It’s clear now just how challenging it is for any brand to put sustainability at the forefront of their business and I’m proud that we’re one of the few taking the lead,” said Kelly on his website.

Hence, inspired by the notion of the globe-trotting explorer in all of us, Outerknown hopes to connect with men looking to up their game while still making time for play.

The brand is set to launch formally this fall.
