The Natural Selection Tour 2021 Jackson Hole kicked off on February 4, 2021. After two years of planning and anticipation, Travis Rice’s brainchild, originally founded in 2008, lives again.

The Natural Selection Concept

The first Natural Selection event took place in 2008 in Jackson Hole. In 2012 and 2013, Rice moved the venue from Jackson Hole to Baldface Lodge, naming the two events Supernatural and Ultra Natural, respectively.

The concept sought to assemble the world’s best riders to compete on the best features in the best snow. To achieve this, they constructed pre-built terrain features on a backcountry-style slope, then prayed for the snow. In addition, by adopting a “waiting period” similar to the World Surf League model, the Natural Selection could choose the best days to compete within a multi-day window. This ensures top quality snow and weather conditions to hold the event and push the progression of snowboarding.

According to Travis Rice, “The Natural Selection Tour is designed with Mother Nature as the main character, and with mutual respect for and from snowboarding,”

The Evolution Continues

After a nine year hiatus the concept is reborn at its original location, Jackson Hole. However, this time, instead of being a one-off event, the Natural Selection Tour will visit three locations in North America: Jackson Hole, WY; Baldface Lodge, British Columbia; and Tordillo Mountain Lodge, Alaska.

This even will also feature women riders for the first time.

“It’s so exciting to see this tour come to life. Competing in a new arena where backcountry meets freestyle against snowboarding’s best is a total honor. This kind of competition is completely new for women in the backcountry. Its important for us to show what we can do, and exciting to see where we can go with it. It will be really incredible to see all of the riders create unique lines with the conditions and the playground we are confronted with in front of a global audience,” says pro snowboarder Robin Van Gyn.
