Park City Man Dies While River Surfing

The Salt Lake City Tribune is reporting that a 30-year-old Park City resident died Monday, while attempting to surf the North Fork of the Flathead River west of Glacier National Park.

According to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Chuck Curry, the man fastened himself to a rock in the river and was subsequently drowned after falling into the Flathead River and being tangled in the rope. People on the scene eventually reached the man and cut the rope, sending him 200 yards downstream before he was recovered. Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful.

According to USGS water data, the river was flowing at roughly 7500 cubic feet per second.

Recently, river surfing has grown into a pastime for landlocked locals but the sport comes with the inherent dangers of cold water, rapids and river navigation.
