The Next Generation of Wave Pool Looms on Horizon

 

Wave pools have always been a dream of many surfers. Crowded beaches, polluted water and inconsistent swell just a few of the reasons why the allure of endless waves in a 72 degree water seems so inviting. There have been a number of incarnations of man-made waves over the years. From Typoon Lagoon, Japan’s now defunct wave dome to the Wave Garden in Spain.

The latest group to join the effort, this time in Australia, is Surf Lakes. The difference with this tech is it pushes the water our concentrically and allow the shape of the pool bottom to affect the shape of the wave. Surf Lake’s plans calls for multiple waves at the same time allowing up to 8-10 surfers riding at once.

They’ve created a crowdfunding campaign to raise $500,000 to develop a prototype. The only caveat being that most surfers live on a short budget of burritos and breaky pies, so $500K might be a tall order.
